relaxing the level II integration requirement
Many participating modeling groups have found the 3 year integration of the Level II simulations to be a computational burden in exchange for limited payoff. At the Paris meeting (May 18th and 19th, 2000) it was agreed that modelers can truncate their forward simulation at a point they deem reasonable but must fill the output arrays with their own extrapolation routine in order to conform to the output specifications laid out in the TransCom 3 protocol.

We have also written a new netCDF conversion program that will transfer the Level II model output into a larger number of files so that memory limitations are less likely to occur upon execution.
The protocol has been updated to reflect the following adjustments to the Level II forward integration.

You may truncate the forward integration prior to completing three years (for example, a two year forward integration). Remember that these tracers are run ‘on’ for the first year then turned ‘off’ afterwards.
The monthly mean output fields must contain the full three years of output and will, therefore, require some form of extrapolation (at modelers discretion).
The high-frequency output fields must also contain three years.
terrestrial and oceanic basis functions, integration and output
You may truncate the forward integration prior to completing three years. A minimum forward integration is 13 months - the month of the pulse and the following twelve.
The monthly mean output fields returned to the TransCom coordinators must contain the full three years of output and will, therefore, require some form of extrapolation (exponential decay is recommended).
The high-frequency output will contain 13 months of output (4 hour timesteps - longer if your model does not run at 4 hour timesteps or less).
SF6 integration and output
This remains a three year equilibrium run as explained in protocol’s Level I description.
Wind output
The monthly mean u, v, and w fields must contain the full three years of output and may require some form of extrapolation (at modelers discretion).
The high-frequency output fields must also contain three years.
